Do I need a filter pad If I have a foam-Prefilter?

Hey guys. Quick question. I'm running a planted 10 gallon nano with just 3 ottos and some cherry shrimp. I have an aquaclear large pore foam pad with a hole cut it it and the filter intake inserted into it. the foam pre filter is new, but once it becomes established with bacteria, can I take the whisper cartirdge out of the filter? I'm running 100 ml of Purigen in the filter along with the whisper filter cartridge, and it's packed in there! Ineffiecient filtration. I know the jury is out on Purigen, but it's gonna stay :-) lol.

The Jury is Out on Purigen? I didn't know that. I have heard absolutely nothing negative at all in reference to Purigen. In Fact, Everything I've come across here and at other forums was so good--I've started using it myself! I love it! I have a UV and a Diatom Filter--neither polish like Purigen.

Just beware---it removes tannins, so if you have a Black water setup--ya don't want to use it.....Other than that: Its Fantastic Stuff.....!!!

Well, I meant some people don't think it's a big deal. I like it :-) Lucky for me no tannins to worry about!

So can I remove the whisper cartridge once the foam prefilter becomes establised?

The whisper filter will filter out finer particles than your sponge.

I would say: Yes, but by waiting and allowing bacteria to build up on the cartridge--just to remove them--just really doesn't make much sense to me.

Also, since your pre-filter is "Large pore" its going to allow more gunk into the filter to clog up the Purigen.

My suggestion would be to either live with the cartridges or find a finer pre-filter....I use several of these and they work well:

Max+Pre+Filter

I meant that I wanted to wait untill the prefilter builds up bacteria. I'd keep it and throw the old cartridge away.

the box doesn't say large pore, it just looks it to me lol.

it's the foam filter insert for an Aquaclear 20. formerly "mini"
