Rough Night. Excel Treatment

I decided to try the Excel Algea treatment by double dosing the intial dose after a water change. I did 2x the directed dose - and also added my other ferts and water hardeners. I also add Barley Extract and Algae Fix (I have always added these....not sure it helps...but I know it hasnt hurt the fish).

After an hour my fish were in BAD shape. Tetras on the bottom of the tank, 1 dead cardinal, one dead rummynose. My Rainbows were gasping at the surface as well.

My plants were pearling like crazy...so my hope was that the O levels would come up and help out....but after a couple hours things seemed to be getting worse.

I did a 50% water change.....and within an hour the situation was back to bad. So I did ANOTHER 50% waterchange and lifted by spray bar to maximize surface agitation (I need to buy an airstone).

Anyway....things were better this morning...but not back to normal. I did not add any ferts, Excel, hardeners, or Algecide after the two water changes.

I will keep you posted.

Do you think this happened becuase I went from adding no Excel to a double dose? Did I shock my fish? Did the Excel react badly with my other additives?

Thanks!

Did you add a dechlorinator, such as Prime, to get rid of any chloramine or chlorine in the tap water? Personally, I would dump the barley extract and algae fix, whatever they are supposed to do, and use only nutrients in the tank. But, I don't know that they were the problem you had.

Maybe you didn't add enough chum and the fish went into DT's and commited suicide...

All kidding aside, I'm with Hoppy, stop dosing the barley extract and algae-fix.

There are two doses on the bottle of Excel - the initial dose and the daily dose. It is safe to double or triple the DAILY dose, but doubling the INITIAL dose is like putting 10xs the daily dose in! I think that's why you had trouble. Don't stop dosing Excel, it really is helpful, just use about 1/5 of what you used last time

That is it. I doubled the intial dose. No wonder doing a 50% water change didnt solve the problem. By doing 2 50% water changes I was still at like 3X the amount of Excel I was supposed to have in there.

Sheesh....bad week for my aquarium addiction!

Also when dosing a treatment, stick with the treatment only without adding other ingredients as well. Too much at one time is not always a good thing.

Doubling the initial (post water change dose) is a very bad thing.

There are two threads on this in the algae section that explain the whole thing.

I doubled the water change recommended dose when I cleaned up the algae in my tank a few weeks ago. Then I repeated the dose three days later. No problems for fish, but the vals all died.

Well the Excel might have been the killer, but I'm guessing the algae fix was at least an extra couple of nails in the coffin. I've heard of fish gasping because that stuff apparently causes algae to come together. It alone can kill some species of fish by suffocation.
