Cheapest place to buy Co2 setup?

I just want a manual pressurized system. What size tank would I need for my Aquarium? Where can I find the cheapest outfit?(tank, regulator, needle valve and co2 tubing?) My girlfriend has offered to buy me the co2 stuff for Christmas....lol i don't think she realizes how much it will be..

Seems like you're planning for a 55 gallon tank.

Buy the biggest tank that will still fit wherever you want it to fit. For my two 10 gallons and 7 gallon cube, I have a manifold coming from a 15# tank. If you can get one, get a 20#.

Tanks would most likely be cheap locally or from a site like Kegerators, Wine Refrigerators, Water Coolers, Beer Taps, Compact Refrigerators | BeverageFactory.com. You can't ship full tanks, and they're pretty heavy empty anyways. Look at local brewing or industrial gas supply/welding shops.

As for the regulator, if you want cheap, you can try the Azoo regulator from DrFostersandSmith, or JBJ or Milwaukee regulators from eBay. Check the forums on here too, sometimes people sell theirs pretty cheap on PT. These regulators come with a needle valve, and the JBJ/Milwakuee come with bubble counters.

As for the tubing, get it from wherever you get your regulator (ie: some eBay sellers will let you buy tubing from them too). If not, get some from Rex Grigg at Rex's Guide to Planted Tanks. Just look under the CO2 stuff for sale tabs.

Filled 20# tank = ~$95-110
New regulator = $90 shipped
Tubing = $10
~$210 for new stuff.

I pieced my setup together slowly and ended up paying $196.50 for a 15#, a used JBJ regulator, a 3-way manifold with 3 bubble counters, and 3 nano glass diffusers for my 3 tanks. Took me maybe a month, month and a half to do that though.

There is a local welding supply store here, maybe I should check it out...could I buy a regulator from them or would it be cheaper online? Also, how big is a 20# tank? How long would it last on my 55?

The regulators you get from there and for your aquarium are a little different, although not by much. I'm not sure of the details regarding those. I think people have used beverage regulators, but I don't know much about those either, sorry!

Depends on where you get it, I think they come in a few different sizes. How long it lasts depends on your bubble rate, but for a 55 gallon with a 20# tank, I'd say ~15-18 months if not more.

Welding regulators will work. But beverage regulators work better.

If you want a high quality manual regulator then save time and quite possibly money by checking out my Guide. Getting the regulator is the easy part. Getting the adapters and needle valve and such is the hard part.

You will get the regulator, needle valve, check valve and tubing. You will NOT get a bubble counter, diffusion method or a cylinder. Depending on your diffusion method you might not need an external bubble counter.

However, if you want all of these things, they can be built fairly easily and there are many threads to be found about each one.

That's all I need. Now if I can just find a cheap cylinder......Oh yeah, how much would shipping be on the manual regulator, and do you take Visa? It might be closer to Christmas, but I will definitely be buying from you Rex...

Good to hear you're buying from Rex. Quality parts, but I can't quite afford it. =P
