Marsilea Minuta

can anyone tell me more about this plant and how to plant it, as well as the different conditions it needs to grow successfully? I am planting it in a low light environment, and have heard conflicting stories about how well it grows, and at what height it typically grows at.

How do I plant it? I've heard that you plant it in pairs, and I've also heard to plant it in bunches. I have very few tools---make that practically no tools (other than the ones that people typically have around the house).

Thanks!

Just plant it in little groups, or space it out. Marselia grows fairly slowly, unless there is more light. Then its slow like a freight train, and once underspeed, it cruises with enough light. I've only grown its bigger brother, M. crenata, but it will do fine in middling light. It might get a little leggy if the light is too low, but it will do OK in low light. The softer the water the better. Overall, Marselia is an easy, undemanding plant. Root tabs might help you. You can see a pic of it in my sig picture. I recently ripped it out when I put some aqua soil in. Now I'm starting some HC.

Would it help to point one of my compact fluorescents at it until the marsilea takes off a little better? Also, I asked this in another thread (but two can't hurt!)---what pairs well with Marsilea?

Generally its a ground cover, so depends on the aquarium size. Most anything. Maybe some crypts or Anubias since your low light. Are you doing any DIY co2?

In another thread I inquired about the use of flourish excel. I'd consider doing that before I bothered with the hassle of setting up my CO2 ladder, yeast bottle and the right ratio of yeast to water to sugar. Ideally, I'd rather not do anything at all, but I figure a capful of chemical once a week is a small task.

Should I set up another light fixture on that timer so that it gets more light, or should I just not bother? If it's going to grow 30% slower with less light, I won't bother. If it's going to grow twice as fast with more light, I think it's worth the effort. I just want to grow this stuff successfully, so tell me what I need to do and I'll try to do it.

I don't know your parameters: tanksize, light, water parameters, etc. Sounds low tech. If its a small tank, maybe try some Excel. 2 liter are cheapest from Bigal or the Drs. On lighting: 2 watts per gallon minimum and over 2.5 watts you need decent CO2. All the info you need is at Rexgrigg.com - Marselia will grow fine/slowly and maybe a little leggy with 2 wpg.

Let me explain my tank parameters.

I have an Eclipse System 3---it's a 3 gallon tank with what I think is a 6w light. I'm not sure of the dimensions at the moment, but they're not too big. It's bowfront.

My water is average---I live in Northern California (Santa Rosa, CA to be precise). I did a water test this morning---ammonia is low, Nitrates are low, Nitrites are medium and PH is in the 7-7.2 range. The tank is still cycling, so the water isn't perfect, but I feel like it'll be OK.

Just use Excel on a nano. Its perfect for that. Probably a petite Anubia would be a good choice, maybe a real small crypt. Water parms usually include KH and GH too. Goodluck.
