What do these bubbles mean?

I'm curious, many of my stem plants have bubbles rising out of the leaves ... why are they doing this?

Peace,

Damage to the plants can cause them to spew tiny streams of bubbles this way.

Something so expensive and addictive HAS to be illegal. I'm just waiting for the police to break down my door and confinscate my fish food.

yea, I am still figuring out what half the acronyms are on here.

Yeah plants are making oxygen. Usually though when you see a stream of bubbles it's doing this because there is a little bit of damage to the leaf at that part and the oxygen "leaks" out of the plant. No big deal. Don't worry about it. You may notice is effect on newly trimmed plants as well. The key is that they are photosynthesizing. This is good.

LoJack, I see that happen after a 50% water change.
presumably excess air gets absorbed into a stem or leaf
and leeches out once the water level get high enough.

did you notice these bubbles soon after a water change
when those leaves emerged from the water temporarily?

yes actually, that pic was taken about 15 minutes after I did a water change ... and none of my plants are doing that now. Lots of them have air bubbles all over their leaves tho, I guess thats a good thing?

I think a lot of times what happens is when you add new water it is rich in oxygen from the tap. Adding this water raises DO levels in the tank and as a result you start to see more pearling/ streaming of bubbles from plants since the water gets saturated and the o2 can dissolve into the water from the plants as easily. As the O2 gets used up this phenomenon decreases. In some really healthy tanks with good levels of Co2 and lots of growing plants these high O2 levels are seen everyday.

When it comes out like string of bubbles it's usually a break in the leaf or stem. I get the same thing when I trim my plants (swords especially).

a stream of bubbles is an injury to the plant and is not considered pearling. You can injure a plant with no pearling in the tank(like when you first turn on the lights) and the stream of bubbles will occur. Pearling usually occurs for me after the lights have been on for several hours. Max pearling starts at around 4 - 6 hours of light for me.

Peace,
Ry
