I picked up a rock today at the mountain when i was hiking there. It is pretty clean and is silver in colour.I washed it and have it soaked in a small pail.I am afraid that it might be filled with contaminants so can anybody tell me anyway to clean that rock from contaminants?

I always boil rocks in a saline solution, then in freshwater.
Then test the rock won't adversly affect your water chemistry by soaking in a bucket of water for a couple of weeks, testing the water every day or 2.

Can rocks or driftwood from near a beach be used? What special precautions should be taken? Is there any faster way to be sure a rock won't affect your tank?

Well doing it fast isn't safe. It's better to do it slow and then make sure it's safe the consiquences of doing things fast and easy then slow and right are not pretty. You can cause a total abomination to your tank. If you are willing to risk that. Best thing I think to do is do what tombsc says to boil in salt water then in fresh. Then test the water in the bucket you soak it in every couple days

Muriatic acid is also what is used for pool chemistry (to make the water more acidic I think).. we have some in our pool shed.
