Post Tankmate problems...

I am new to this forum, although I have been learning new information from this site for a while. I have recently started fishkeeping again after a failed attempt a several years ago.
Anyways, I have a crowntail betta, 5 neon tetras, and two Otocinclus in a 10 gallon with some plants. I had 3 neon tetras in with the betta originally, and everyone got along fine. Then I added 3 black skirt tetras and they chewed part of my betta's tail, so I returned them to my LFS. I then added 2 more neon tetras and those two are now nipping my betta (oh by the way, the betta is a complete pushover and never bothers the other fish) so I took out the betta and put him in a bowl for now.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve this other than removing the betta because I feel bad putting the betta in the bowl and I don't really have $$ to start another tank for just the betta....

Thanks in advance!

Betta getting nipped by neon tetras ? Woah. Sometimes tetras become aggressive when there are too few of them and certain fish become dominant over the whole group. Having a large shoal can negate this effect. If your LFS allow returns you could keep experimenting till you find a mix that work I suppose.

Never heard of neons nipping at betta's but hey, stranger things can happen in the fish world.

Is your tank planted? Maybe the betta needs a hiding place until they all get acclimated to each other.

Thanks for some ideas, I have 5 neon tetras which is probably as few as I should have in a group and it really only seems to be the biggest one of the group that is picking on the betta. I do have some plants (and am working on getting more) and a cave but then the betta just hides and the problem isn't really resolved because when he comes back out, he is bitten again
