Can you do carpeting plants with a African Feather-fin catfish

Ok I just got this marine land 55 gal tank that fits perfectly in my room. I wants to do a planted tank with it but I'm still new at it. Currently I have 2 other tanks with live plants in them.
A 10 gallon with some java ferns and some sort of grass I found at the pet store.
-2 flame dwarf gourami's
-yoyo loach
-a rubber lip pleco
And a 45 gallon with swords, anubias, and java ferns
-2 angels
-African brown knife
-African bush fish
-sailfin pleco
-African feather-fin(his name is squeakers)

I'm planning on moving my African fish into this aquarium. The light is the 55g I got is a regular fluorescent, but I was wondering if I did a carpeting plant like dwarf hairgrass or baby tears would it be fine. I honestly don't know if squeakers needs to be able to sift through the sand like Cory's or if he'll be fine with the carpet on the bottom.
