I was just given a 10 gallon aquarium with a Whisper Power filter and I was wondering if I could make a planted aquarium with a sand substrate. Would this work or is it a bad idea. Any input would be greatly apreciated.

Sand _can_ work quite well in a planted, tank, it actually holds the plants down better than gravel. Sand itself is like gravel and has little nutrients, so you likely need to put something in the bottom to make it nutritious. If you decide on sand, make sure you put the sand in with the filter off, otherwise the filter will suck up sand!

ok, I have most of a bag of laterite left. I also have a small bag of gravel, could I mix those in with it?

yes you could mix those with it....just put teh gravel and the laterite on the bottom layer then cover with sand....you will probably need more sand then you thin because over time the sand will fill in the gaps between the gravel and laterite....

10 gallon low-tech Betta bowl...for now.
