Betta just died. Any ideas why

Ok, so I just lost my betta and I'm not sure why.

He was in my fully cycled tank with a couple of mollies and 6 neon tetra. The water quality is always good in terms of ammonia(0) nitrite(0) and nitrate with the latter currently showing very low levels. The temp is fine. The ph is around 7.5 and hardness is high as I live in a hard water area. There is zero chlorine present.

All the other fish are health but for the last few days the betta has been very quiet. He was floating around, sometimes facing straight down or up and sometimes sitting on the bottom. My conclusion was swim bladder disease so I upped the water changes.

Earlier today he suddenly got very stressed and just died!

Any ideas what may have caused this?

Could be many reasons. How long have you had him? Did you QT him prior to entering the tank? Was he eating? Any fish in the tank stressing him out? How often and how much water do you change? What size tank?

Could the mollies have bullied him without you noticing? They might have left the betta alone until it started showing signs of distress, like from swim bladder disease - and then those livebearers took it to town at night.

How long have you had him? Even if he was just a recent purchase from the fish store, he could have been a lot older than you think. More often than not, the bettas that get stuffed into cups at your LFS are a year old or more. Such small living quarters also shortens their life span significantly and once you take them home, you don't get to enjoy them long.

Also, did he appear to have a swollen belly? Bettas are extremely prone to getting dropsy.
