alder cone twigs in shrimp tanks?

Should I add the entire alder cone with the twig? or just the cones?

Also how much should I put in for my various sized tanks, do the cones disappear on their own and I replace? How long do they last?

thank you!

I like to break the cone off the twig for aesthetic reasons but it shouldn't hurt anything.

Each cone is different, so it's tough to know how many to add. I've had instances where a handful of cones in a 20gal tank didn't do much but have also had instances where just 3-4 tiny little cones turned the entire tank brown.

You can leave them in until your shrimp have picked them clean.

it all depends on the source of these cones, whether they have been treated post collection. I suggest placing 5 or so in a glass and leave it over night to see how much tannins are leached out... if the color is tea colored or darker, then you know to use fewer.

Gauging the potency of the cones on hand is much easier to do in a closed environment than in your tank with larger volumes of water.

The twig does not alter ph and disapear from tank correct? Shrimp only eat the cones

Also curious which is better cones or indian leaves?

There is no 'better' - it's all subjective and dependent upon any number of factors.

The twigs will likely break down eventually.
