Effects of charcoal

After reading some of the posts on charcoal, I just recently removed it from my filter media. Can anyone say, from experience, the improvements they received from this?

Charcoal is mainly used to remove medication or bad smell from the water and it is effective for a few day only.
If you have a planted tank it is better to take the charcoal out since it removes nutrients from the water .
