maybe a stupid question?

with small tanks, how do you guys do water changes and top offs without disturbing the topography of the substrate and the plants? whenever i pour water in the substrate moves and plants get unhappy.

anything besides the obvious 'pour extremely slowly'? some kind of trick?

An easy way is to use a watering can (like you'd use in a garden). You can pour it in pretty fast and it's amazing how little disturbance it causes.

Pour the water in the filter (if you have hang on the back filter) slowly.
It works well for my 5gal tank.
