how does kH and gH effect plants?

I tried looking through rex grigg's guide, and i couldn't find anything on how exactly kH and gH effects the plants in your tank. My question is, what effect does high/low kH and high/low gH on plants? Are these effects visible to the naked eye, as in do extremely high or low levels manifest themselves as certain problems with plants?

Very few plants care about the kH or the gH. Though if the gH is low you will need to dose calcium and magnesium.

There are a very limited number of plants that prefer very low TDS.
