Newbie- 20H/10, no CO2

Is it possible to have a planted tank without CO2 injection? I have read around but haven't found much information on tanks without it. Ideally I would use a 20H with a school of small tetras. I would also like to set-up a ten gallon.

Here are some questions:

1. I saw Petsmart had some bags of "Laterite". (sp?) What exactly is that and would I need it?

2. What kind/how much lighting would I need for the plants, w/o haveing too much for the algae?

3. What size of gravel should I use? I used sand for a fish tank once, but didn't like it, it kept on stopping the powerfilter and was hard to really clean.

I have kept fish for a couple years now and would really like to create some nice planted tanks, small enough to be easy to work with and easy to clean. I think a 10/20H would work perfect. Let me know if you have any suggestions, thanks! -Ryan

Take a few minutes and read my Guide.

You can have a tank without CO2 many people do it today and almost everyone did it for years.

Also a 10 gallon IMHO is a bad choice for a first tank. Way to small to really grow most plants.
