I am getting a 120 gal show tank tomorrow. I am not so sure as to what I am going to do with it yet.

Hard water? Rainbows, and lots of them, semi planted tank with some low tech plants.........nothing too fancy.......

Soft Water? I always wanted to do a Satanoperca tank.......with ADA bright sand, a 2217, and that's about it.

In college....so no aquariums for a while.....

I just had a great idea for your 120 gallon tank! Give it to me so I can try out all of the ideas I have for how you can make it look really great! Honest! I just want to help you.

Sorry to say, my wife just said I can't do this favor for you. She just doesn't want that big a tank in the living room. Darn!

I was kinda thinking the same thing. I was considering some Frontosa as a center piece, I have always loved them.

I am now making my list as to what I need for equiptment.

Lights:

It came with a 48" Eclipse F40T10 bulb in the stock fixture.

I am looking at AHSupply for lights but I am a bit confused. I am thinking that the 2X96wt is where I am going to start (planning on adding more light next month ). But it states the reflectors are 34.5"L x 4"W. The problem being is I dont want a canopy so I am building an eclosure like this one. and I wont be able to butt the bulbs end to end as my tank is 60" L.

Or am I missing something here?

Filtration:

Rena XP3

Now I have an Ehiem 2026 Pro II and a Fluval 304 on my current tank and I can move one of them onto this tank as well, but I would rather only run a single canister. If I do move one it will be the Ehiem.

Substrate

I cant offord to use the really good stuff, so I am thinking some sort of sand with peat underneath it.

Is this a good idea?

I am searching for a good quality inline external heater to attach to the XP3 but I am not finding to much. What would you recommend?

C02

I am going to start with 2 (or more) 2liter bottles and glass diffusors and migrate over to a 10lb cylinder and inline reactor when I get the money.

Fish to be added

6 Discus, 4 Congo Tetras, Nice school of Rummy Nose Tetras, 4 or so SAE's, 6 yo-yo's and 6 cory's

I am on a fixed income (military disability) so I am kinda limited and dont want to waste money. I don't want to say later "I shoulda...."

All imput is greatly appreciated as I am still a n00b when it comes to planted tanks and the things I need. If I was going to go with a reef tank I would know exactly what I need as I have almost 20 yrs invested in that hobby..

Shultz Clay Conditioner would work I know it is not the best looking stuff but it is cheap 40lbs. $15 to $20 plus ground cover can always be used to take away the look from it. Just a idea

Or Soilmaster.
Go for at least a 50/50 mx with sand/gravel.
2 2L bottles will provide negligible benefit on a tank that size. Might be better off adopting a long term timetable, and saving your sugar costs to go towards your pressurized system.
I think you will like 2 filters just for circulation.
The only inline heater I'm familiar with is the Hydor - which increases your costs considering your budget restraints.
Don't rush into anything with a tank this size - your mistakes will be too costly.
I'm wondering what contributed to your switching in one day from Africans to Discus?

I was thinking of hiding a powerhead. I am willing to buy two filters if I must.
