Any fast growers would be good, plants simply love nitrates, provided you have a bacteria colony to turn them into food for the plants though.

First things first... he should be paying attention to his water changes. If he's not able to do that then I fear that planted tank won't help him much.

Plants need phosphate to absorb nitrate, so if he's not dosing anything, a dose of phosphate that brings his tank between 2.5 - 5 ppm will help the plants use that nitrate.

Oh, the best suggestion is still water changes. Changing 50% of the water (presuming no nitrates in the change water) will lower that immediately to 40ppm.

Agree with the above two posts. Don't even worry about the plants until he gets the nitrates under control with water changes. Do 25% to to 50% water changes to keep the nitrates under 40 ppm until the plants are in and growing.

100% agree with this track. WC first, ID what light is on the unit and decide what plants can handle. Start dosing the other macros and micros as the tank matures. Depending on the selection and amount of light will dictate if you need to start adding CO2, since this sounds like a fish only setup you probably can forgo the C02.

I have found that PO4 was my limiting Macro and NO3 is finally being used. Now Iím adding PO4 like crazy and each day I can see the difference when testing.

Good luck.
