Bananas peetered out

I had sensational growth with all my plants in my 10g, with the bananas sending multiple pads to the surface (and roots taking over underneath). But over the last couple months the bananas are barely alive, they have no "bananas" left on them and have small 1/2" leaves. They used to take up 1/3 of the tank with huge 2" leaves. In comparison my new wisteria is taking off, sending root shoots down and new, giant growth, etc.
The roots on the bananas are pretty much gone, they got turned up when I mized in Laterite to help out (had only gravel before). What nutrients would be depleted such that the banana plants (and my long gone cabombas) would deteriorate so? I dose Leaf Zone for Fe and K, CO2 by DIY bottle, and Fluorish for lots of other nutrients. The tank is crammed with fish so there should be plenty of Nitrogen available.

The same thing happened to my bananas, but I am pretty sure I know what happened. Somewhere I heard that bananas need some time grown emmersed (above water - in a little soil) each year or they go kaput.

I used to have 8 inch round leaves from my two plants and in a matter of a couple weeks, no leaves. Nothing else changed in my tank at all. look around the internet, you may find a procedure for saving your bananas.

Somebody set us up the tank!
