Planted aquarium in the classroom - Activities?

Does anyone know of a source of middle school level classroom activities related to planted aquariums? It would be a perfect way to study nitrogen and carbon cycles, not to mention food chains and behavior. I've only found a few early elementary level activities. I just transported my 20 gal planted tank into the classroom where I'll be giving an ecology workshop for middle school science teachers, and although it won't be a focus of the workshop, I'd like to show them some education resources that are available should they be interested in setting up their own planted tanks.

I would contact or consult Tom Barr. you can even maybe subscribe to his report and do a "light" version of his topic for your classroom. He definitely goes way into detail, which is what I like about reading his things, but you can be more general and get to the point he is trying to make for each topic. His site is
