Hey all,

Aquatic-store.com is backordered on their CO2 kits and I have a bottle of Excel that my friend just gave me. Would Excel be a decent substitute for the timebeing? My tank is 100 gallons and I read somewhere that Excel wouldn't cut it for a tank my size. Is this true?

Thanks in advance

It works pretty well in my 20g but you'd need to use a TON of it in a 100g. I'm doing 1 ml twice a day to get glosso to grow. So for a 100g, I suppose 5 ml (a capful) twice a day? You have to be careful not to overdose, that's why I recommend thw 2x day dose.

Aaaaah, OK. I dose 9 ml once a day. BTW, why should one not overdose with Excel?

For what it's worth......

I have a 55 gallon community tank that has "evolved" into a pretty heavily planted tank (~3 Watts per gallon). I have never bothered to go to a pressurized CO2 system (2 x 2L bottles) on this one as I get strong growth and healthy plants using DIY CO2 supplemented with ~5 ml of Flourish Excel every third day.

It's difficult to say how much impact the Flourish has vis-a-vis the DIY system, but conventional wisdom says that the DIY system shouldn't have enough "horsepower" on its own. I grow a wide range of pretty common plants including Crypt.s, swords, Anubias, Bacopa, etc, etc, etc. I see regular pearling on most of them and they are certainly healthy. I ripped out both wisteria and hornwort because they became uncontrollable.

I have never seen any adverse effects on the fish or any change in behaviour when I dose the Excel.

Hope this may be helpful,

Roger

Oops...

Just to be clear per the above message; the "(2 x 2L bottles)" parenthesis should have been inserted after the mention of DIY CO2 not pressurized! Sorry for not re-reading carefully before pressing the submit button!

No problem , I don't think many people use 2 x 2L bottles for pressurized CO2.

I'll switch to 5 ml doses twice a day and see how that goes. It's just gonna suck come Thanksgiving, since I'll be out for 5 days.

I've tried both and I never noticed a difference in plant growth when using that CO2 Liquid. But it was in a 55g tank. I had two bottles going at once and still nothing.
Flourish Excel works in a pinch.
