Wow! You sound like you really have a lot of interest in fish, thinking of a planted tank and breeding fish at the same time!
If it is a 40L (I thought that was 40 litres at first, but the measurement show it isn't a ten gallon!) then you will have plenty of space to grow plants, and 40 gallons isn't so much that it is overwhelming. Also, a long tank is probably better for aquascaping since you have more bottom surface area and less distance from substrate to light (better for plants). Good luck!
