I have a nice piece of wood that I think may be softwood. I boiled it quite a while and I wonder how hazardous it is to use. Everybody says softwood may be toxic, but does anyone have personal experience that it actually is?

It would be great if you tested the theory out. It might be fine. I'd try just a few cheap fish the first month or so.

"Softwood" isn't really a good way to classify wood... I believe most of the wood I have used could be categorized as such (root pieces of pine?) and to me the key is how long it has been submerged in flowing water, which gives it time to leach out any toxins. When I clean such wood with a brush, little pieces and areas get brushed off, that's why I am sure it is "softwood".
I consider it pretty safe to use whatever is left of wood that has been in water for (a few?) years. On the contrary, I would not use "hardwood" that has never been submerged.
YMMV...
