I went fishing today and found some more wood This piece was not in the water but has been before....only thing is the water is salt water. Does this matter?? I boiled it for a long time today and the water would turn a dark dark color...is this normal. Is this another piece of wood that I shouldn't use?

As long as the wood is hard and has no soft spots in it , it will be fine. The problems normally come from soft spots in the wood that act as a sponge, and this is normally where you can get the "critters" from as well.

You didnt say how long ya boiled it but I would soak it in a cooler full of fresh water for a few days also to see what leaches out in the way of tannins and/or salt.
Even better is if you have a nice stream near ya... What I do is take my pieces and tie a rope to them and let mother nature flush the wood clean.

Just be sure that the wood is a hardwood and all should be fine

I will have to take some pics of it on monday so yall can see. Right now i have it in a 5gal bucket with a stick holding it under because it wants to float.

If it is soft at all then it is probably going to be a nuisance piece or wood. You should be able to tap it with a fingernail and get a clicking sound rather then a thud type sound, especially if it was in salt water.

Your tank, your choice to make though... 8)

Well I dont want to use it if I think it will be a mess. It has now sunk in the bucket of water so that is a good thing so far. I just pulled it out and flicked it with my nail and for the most part it clicks...there are a few spots on the ends and stuff that seem softer than the rest. Is there any way to see if it is leaching out anything bad into the water. Like if I start with a bucket of fresh tap water and let it sit for a day could i test for stuff...like see if it changed the PH or something?

Ok here are a few pics of it. I dont know anymore....there seems to be a slight slick of some sort on top of the water in the bucket. This is the color of the water after like 2 days in the bucket. So what do yall think...ditch it?
