Do I need anything else to start my planted tank?

Going to move my fish and plants from my 20 into a brand new 36 today. I've decided to do things different to make my plants healthier.

The new tank will have Eco Complete, topped with a layer of my current gravel. I'm changing my fertiliser from API LeafZone to Flourish Comprehensive, adding Excel also. I already have a dual T5 fixture, any bulb recommendations? I've been using the normal 6.5k and colormax bulb.

And of course just will be adding a few more anubias, sword, bacopa and hygrophila or ludwigia.

Feedback appreciated. I don't have high light, it's about 2wpg, and I don't want to do Co2 equipment.

What specific T5 light do you have? A Coralife 2 bulb, a FishNeedIt 2 bulb, or what? How much light you have depends on what light fixture you have, the quality of the ballast and reflectors. What are the wattages of the bulbs?

I currently have the Aqueon T5... But haven't bought the T5 for the new tank, should I get the Odyssea one instead? I just don't want to pay like over a hundred for it. Mine is not a high output.

Actually only 28w so 1.4 wpg.

I got an odyssey T5 2 bulb combo for $60 bucks. Each lamp is 65k and 54 watts a piece. I like it so far

later you will eventually want to grow other stuffs which requires more light, and co2.
in my case, odyssea t5HO quad is around 60$, and this will eliminate the possibility of upgrading the light fixture later on.

For the bulb for your T5 dual, 6500k, 10000k would work for good i think.

So even though the watts are the same, high output is better in general because of the ballasts and reflectors and stuff?

Wattage should be ignored in any case. The watt per gallon (WPG) guideline is outdated, and can only applied to T12 bulbs.

I know a guy who has tanks that would make anyone question the need for high light or Co2.

Oh sorry, it seemed like the basic way of calculating, still fairly new which is why I've stuck with easy plants. So how do you guys calculate how much light I need, and what would you recommend I do?

I'm going to be honest, I'm pretty lazy lol. Replacing some root tabs and maintenance isn't a big deal, but I tried to read into Co2 and it seemed too complicated, and I didn't want to get too much into it. I want my tank to be natural, but not exactly like an underwater garden or high tech, just some simple stuff : )

For example, my favorite plant is my anubias nana. It was my first plant, I tied it to a rock, barely touched it since November, and it is pretty, grows like CRAZY and I've never had a dead leaf. That's good as it gets for me hahah

@James M I live in Tacoma, you can come do my plants for me if you'd like ; D LOL.

Ok... I found this but still don't understand it fully. http://s573.photobucket.com/user/Hop...ights.jpg.html

My tank is 20" tall. It shows that the Coralife T5NO dual bulb is the less powerful, sooo should I pick something in the middle for what I want? (Odyssea dual bulb High Output)

First, you need to look up the type of fixture you have (Coralife T5NO dual bulb fixture - the red curve).

Next you have your tank height (20 inches). Draw a straight line from your tank height (on the abscissa) to the red curve, and then draw a perpendicular line from there to the ordinate.

This gives you a PAR of just under 30 micromoles per square meter per second.

This is just on the border of low-medium light (high end of low light, low end of medium light).

Since you mentioned you do not want to be injecting CO2, you may want to stay around here. Your plants that you selected should be OK with this amount of light, though they may grow slowly.

For more information (if you haven't already), take a look at this informative guide written by Hoppy:

I have the Aqueon Dual T5NO so it's not on there. Probably same as Coralife, maybe a little less powerful.

The Odyssea one actually looks like it would provide high light. So leaning towards the FishNeedIt or Hagen Glo one.
