I have a sword plant (sold as a broad sword, but am a little sceptical.... it is a sword tho). The leaves are a nice colour green but they have small black spots on them, and one of the leaves have a large black area at its perimeter.

As im new to the planted tank game i am wondering if the plants are diseased, or if that sort of thing just happens. The tank is arelatively low light tank (about 1.75W/Gallon). Also in the tank is micro sword, and Eoladia (both doing excellently)

If your plant is a Sword plant than:

Most likely your sword is losing its leaves (oh no!), don't worry though there's a reason for this: Most Sword plants you buy at the pet store are grown emersed, not submersed. They grow fine either way, but they have 2 different kinds of leaves, the emerged kind and the submerged kind. The emerged leaves die when put under water and new leaves (the submerged kind) grow in their place.

However your plant may be a Java Fern:

Your discription says small black spots on the leaves. Java Ferns often have these spots. So I don't know if you have a sword or a Java Fern (they don't look like ferns)

It may also be a Brazil Sword which will not survive underwater. It would be very helpful if you could post a picture because "broad sword" is not a common name that I recognise.

I will go with what NFish said. since i posted the message the plant has begun to grow small healthier looking leaves, and the others are looking quite bad now. i think that it must be getting underwater leaves.

thanks heaps.
