130g New Tank advice

Hi all.

I've decided to take the plunge and purchase a bigger tank for a tropical setup with live plants (which I'm new to) and I'm also going to try hardscaping using Iwugami and maybe throw in some wood and if possible build some small caves for fish to hide in.

The substrate I'm leaning towards is Fluval Stratum topped with ADA Malayan (I like the colour) with fertilizer tabs under both levels. First off, is this a good choice?

Secondly, I'm not looking to use CO2 injection, will a large stock make up for that?

Are there any ideas or tips you guys can suggest that I can employ when I do get the tank?

I know there are stickies on this and other sub forums but I just wanted the quick input of experienced aquascapers if at all possible.

Many thanks for your time.

You might consider a potting soil based substrate if you like saving money.

A large stock will not give you the benefits of CO2 injection.

Best advise I can give is to do your homework and research everything very well.

I just revamped my 75 gallon to a planted tank a couple months ago and it's doing great now. It was ok but going very slow until the addition of DIY CO2. Then most everything just exploded with growth.

The biggest challenge I have is that due to the height of my tank at roughly 20", my carpet plants don't seem to be getting enough high light to spread like the rest of my plants. This is something you might want to consider before you go full on Iwugami. I believe that style normally requires high light and pressurized CO2 to do well? I may try dropping my light fixture to right on top of the tank instead of on its 2.5" risers.

Wow I just looked up your tank... very vibrant and rich with good growth. I think I will go the CO2 route after all.

Many thanks for the reply.

Out of interest, what did you use the styrofoam for? I'm considering using some for a raised bank effect towards one of the rear corners.

I don't think I'll go full on Iwagumi but do appreciate the aesthetic value that some of it brings with it, I'll just be adding my own touches to it and not necessarily following it to a tee, I'm not even sure I'll be able to source all the materials/rocks I'll need to begin with.

Are you recommending that substrate as a complete replacement for the two I wanted to use? I'm still not 100% on substrate, there are far too many options which make my head hurt!

Do you need to wash that substrate before pouring it into the tank?

Another thing I'm pondering is a kind of under-substrate (sub-substrate ) tunnel system with housing for my Black Ghost Knifefish if I can somehow keep the water moving down there.
