Compact light and substrate

Can any one help me with these two questions. Is a 36 inches, 192 watts cf light appopriate for a 55 gallon acrylic tank measure 48" wide, or do I really need a 48inch light. and how many lb of substrate is the idea amount for a 55 gallon tank that measure 48 inches long.

192 watts is enough light, but getting it close to even across the entire tank wouldn't be at all easy, if it could be done at all. Less light, but more evenly distributed would work better.

What are you using for lightm fixtures? If it is some kind of strip light fixture that you have just sitting on a glass cover, then you can stagger the fixtures to get a more even light displacement. If you have the 36" fixtures in the center of the tank, then the ends of the tank will be much dimmer, which may still work for you. You will just need to experiment a little. Trial and error

Robert, it is a Coralife compact fluorescent with two 96watts. the reason, I am asking if this fixture will be okay for my 48inche wide 55 gallon tank is because I can buy it from a friend for $100. Thanks for the advices
