Mystery Duckweed Type Plant

I got this plant free at the LFS and it's actually rather charming. It grows like duckweed, splitting off smaller plants and spreading like crazy, but it's far too big in it's mature state to be actual duckweed family. Can anyone help me ID it?

Thanks guys,

--Jimmy

So it just floats on top of the water like duckweed? How much light do you have over it?

Yeah sorry, camera takes big pics and I didn't have time to size them down. I have 2 48in double strip shoplights with GE Plant & Aquariums hanging about 14in off the water. This stuff goes nuts, and yes it's a floating plant with very large root systems that hang down into the water.

That second pic is ONE plant with many smaller ones springing forth from the leaves.

That's a Ceratopteris species, water sprite. Possibly Ceratopteris cornuta.

That looks just like it, but this is a floater and the ones that showed up on google are planted, will it work as both then?

Yes it will and the leaves look a bit different when it grows underwater.

Thank you Rain. You've been a big help. Even the manager at the LFS doesn't even know what it is, but I liked the look so I took a sprig, one month later my water was covered. It's almost a visible growth rate, I love it. Anyway, thanks for the ID.

It's good to be able to help. C. cornuta is really the most propable species, but the other Ceratopteris species do look quite similar when floating, so I can't promise a 100% identification. I have experience only with C. cornuta.
