Are you asking how the fern reproduces? Or do you want it to change it's current leaf shape?

You can't.

Thats the way the fern is. It is genetically programmed to produce a particular frond size. I imagine if you cut back on fertilizers quite hard you could possibly stunt the plant, but then it would probably not produce as many fronds as it should. You would be sacrificing the plant's overall health for a stunted frond.

The plants that come from the plant farms are young plants, not adult ones that are some way shrunken. Just like the fish you get from the breeders.

You propagate the plant by splitting the rhizome and letting the parts grow. The new leaves are small at first, but they will reach the full size after a while, the rhizome will also grow bigger and longer.

The plant will produce smaller leaves on thinner, younger rhizomes. However, as the plant grows and ages the rhizome will get thicker and the fronds (ferns have fronds as opposed to leaves) will get larger. The small ferns come from the thinner, younger rhizomes.

Can you get new fronds from a bare piece of rhizome? If the piece of rhizome is healthy and strong enough to grow, it should produce new fronds.
