guppies rule in cold water. They would survive a winter in San Diego. I know, I know, it sounds warm, but 2 or 3 months at 60 degrees with dips into the 50's for weeks on end can get cold. And the guppies I had did great.

I have some mosquito fish in my tank and I think they are related to guppies. At least they look just like fleshy colored guppies. I netted them out of my parents swamp/pond in South GA and it gets below freezing down there a few times a winter.

Guppies and endlers survive in my tub garden during the summers, where the water temp sometimes hits the mid 90's (F) for parts of the day. Just provide some areation and watch the water level.
