Jungle vals getting transparent?

I am having a bit of a problem with my jungle vals. They are in the back of the tank new the CO2 ladder. After the initial breakage and browning, I thought they would recover, like the corkscrews I have in the mid ground. But for some reason, most of the leaves are getting almost translucent. Could it be that it's too close to the CO2 source? Not enough light, since they are in the back? I didn't think Vals needed high light?

Oh, I almost forgot, since I have been posting so much on here lately. Parameters are:

ph = 6.8 - 7
KH = 2
GH = 3
Nitrate = 10 PPM
temp = 78 F
65 W Coralife PC
20 gallon tall
Red Sea Flora Base
Dosing with Kent Freshwater Plant once a week

Talking jungle vals

Hey!Nice to see a fellow Canuck here.Well, I have a serious Jungle Val jungle so I thought I would chime in.First,don't worry about the co2 ladder.I run pressurized practically right through them!Your light is good(more than enough!)How long have the vals been in the tank?They are really fast growers so maybe up the firts a bit.My water is really hard so maybe thats it.I dose Flourish,Excel,Potassium and Phosphorus(all Seachem).What is your fish load ?Man ,when those plants get a foot hold...well lets just say your scissors better be handy!

Vals like harder water. GH 3 is very soft. Are you adding any Mg and Cal. You could pick up some Seachem Equilibrium and dose a little of that to raise the GH or Epsom salts and Calcium chloride. But don't add the Mg and Cal. at the same time or you will get hard to dissolve calcium sulfate. Do you add any potassium to the water? Another option if using a cannister filter is to pick up some crushed coral and put it in a media bag in your cannister filter. Maybe less than an 1/8 cup for a 20G tank. Check out Chuck's nutrient deficiency here:http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_nutrient.htm

Thanks for the input guys. I am not currently dosing any macros, such as K. After much reading here, I will be going to my local Hydroponics store and getting some KNO3, KH2PO4 and K2SO4 for dosing.

The vals have been in the tank for about 2 months now.

I have been adding Epsom salts to boost GH a bit, but am doing it slowly, as I am concerned about making changes too rapidly. I am been also using baking soda to boost KH a bit also. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on it and do it more steadily. I have added a "tufa" rock from the local Big Al's to buffer KH a bit also.

If your water is any like mine (I'm just down the block) you might need to dose a little calcium chloride. I got my latest batch at Lowes which is a big box hardware store. Cost was about a buck for a lb. of this stuff: "Dry-Z-Air"... which is for dehumidifiers and its basically 100% Calcium Chloride in BB sized pellets. I can give you some gram scale weight doses on MG and Cal. if ya PM me.

I revisited this issue yesterday (sadly, while watching my cardinals die one by one, and it seems that the comment about the vals being delicate and the original leaves all dying off was right on the money. I am noticing quite a bit or new growth, while all of the original leaves have pretty much died off. So I think they're probably grow out normally now.
