Planted vs fish

Hello all,

I have a 45G now that I will be replacing with a 46G bowfront. I have only cichlids now. How much work would it be switching to a planted tank? I am assuming my HOB power filters are a no-no. I have plenty of light.
I usually do a ~30% water change once a week.

The planted tanks just look so nice. Is it much more work than a fish only tank?

Thanks

Nice looking planted tanks, in my experience, are a lot more work than a fish only tank - really a lot more work. But, they are a lot more fun too. I keep fish only because they add a little something more to look at, but my tank is for growing plants, and it is a lot of work and a lot of fun.

My 29g planted has been the hardest tank I have ever kept up with. I have ran Tropical Fish-Only, River, Marine and elaborate reef setups (all 55g or more).

However, I have to say it has been the most rewarding.

Define "plenty of light".

I have 7 planted tanks. Ranging from 10 to 40 gallons. 3 have pressurized CO2 and 4 I dose excel. I use a modified EI dosing regime on all tanks. The CO2 tanks are a lot of work. The Excel tanks are not. I get equal pleasure from each tank. All are lush and heavily planted. I am a firm believer that you can have a nice planted tank without a lot of work. However, I elect to grow some rather difficult plants that require much work in my co2 tanks. I am equally interested in the fish and shrimp that inhabit most of my tanks. I only have 1 plant only tank. I like diversity in my tanks. I have also learned that some "difficult" plants grow well in non co2 tanks. Sometimes better!

Good Luck,

Mike

Though I have only had 1 marine (60G) I'd have to agree with Keck.

I have 4 overdrivven NO bulbs over the 45G right now, but am considering MH.

What would I need for a filter?
I think I would like to start without the CO2.

So I will guess you have about 180 watts of light over the tank.

Normally you would have 120 watts with 4 36" tubes. I'm giving you a 1.5X for the ODNO.

You need CO2 at that light level.
