IMO there is no need for you to change your substrate. All you need for a successful planted tank is good light, CO2, and a steady supply of nutrients. The substrates main job is to hold the plants. The specialty planted tank substrates do provide some nutrients which varies by manufacture, but again IMO the nutritional benefits of these substrates are overstated.
I have used EcoComplete, Flourite and Onyx and so far I have had the best success with Soilmaster Select (less than $18 for a 50#bag). Why, because I have plenty of light, and efficient CO2 reactor and a good fert. regiment.
