Max lighting

Ok floresents that are about 40watts. its about 4$ at candian tire or home depot. Is there any other way to get bulbs at a higher wattage that wont cost an arm and a leg like ceiling lights or is that to powerfull for the fish tank.

i saw the one tank on hear with 4.6 watts per gallon. I'm at 1.2 there any other light fixtures I can use for the tank?

Even if you found higher wattage bulbs, think HO or VHO bulbs they would not work in your current fixture as the ballast is only designed to fire the 40 watt bulb(s).

To light a planted tank you either have to buy a light designed for doing that or go with something like an AH Supply kit that you can put in your current strip.

Like Rex said, the ballast is what determines the wattage of the light. If your 40 watt light has a 40 watt ballast you will never get more than 40 watts no matter what kind of bulb you use.

Lighting is expensive... you can try out ODNO. There are a few articles on the forum about it. Just use the search button.

I'm checking out the Metal Halide Lamps on this site http://www.elights.com/methallam.html there are so many to choose from witch are the good ones like 200watts one on each end of the tank its 5 x 2 x 18?

I'm totally new to this but i want great lighting for the plants But I don't want to burn or hurt my discus. I'm on 12 h of light everyday in my tank.

will these lights be so strong they will hurt the discus?
what wattage should I use?
and how many would be good for my 112g tank?

go to AH supply..get what you need. Doing it right the first time (I of course don't follow that rule well) is always cheaper.

I use a mix of 6700k and 9325k. The 9325k ones aren't available from AHSupply but you can get them many other places online.

I'm using 10k MH over my tank and love the way it looks. I used it because the tank used to be my reef tank and it was the bulb I used for that. Its not blue but is actually a pretty warm color.

To get a blueish looking MH you'd have to go to the 15k's. I use them on my new reef tank while they look sharp there I don't think I'd like 15k's on my planted.

As to discus. I can't help you there.
