How to level stand?

All years I have been keeping tank, I have been lucky, never had to level stand before. I know 100% certain the tank is fine, along with the floor. So the stand itself is the problem. It very heavy solid oak stand. The bottom is not solid, just has trim all the way around it and board in the center. I assume just buying standard shims that are sold at lowes should work, put a few in, break off the extra and good to go? Or do I need more than that?

This is for 90 gallon tank 48x18

You level the tank and the stand as one unit. Put wood shims under the stand to level then score/break them off flush. I use metal stands myself. Leveled the tank/stand with a 4' level. When I started to fill it the water wasn't level with the bottom trim ring. The level said it was level. The tank water said no. Since it's metal on concrete in my fish house I just used washers as shims. My built in with DIY stand I used the wood shims. You could also use the newer version that's plastic.

I use wood shims on the carpet.

For stands on my wood floors, I use felt dots.

My experience is generally the stands are only as level as the floor, unless it was constructed wrong. Just use shims to level.
