advice for a nano tank

Have an old ~2 gal hex tank (7.5" wide, 9.5" tall) sitting around and decided to make a desk top aquarium for work. Planning on keeping CPO's and orange throated phanchax as the fuana. As far as the flora I am using plants I already have in an old tank which are.

X mas moss
Fissidens fontanus
Java Fern
Anubias Barteri "petite"
Maybe Crtyp. Wendtii if it will fit.

I am using cholla wood in the back ground to anchor the java ferns and Anubias along with a small rock and mopani driftwood I have laying around.

My questions are:

Would the Java ferns make a good background plant for a tank this size?

I have 2 options for substrate, I have eco complete gravel and flourite. Should I bother with the flourite if I don't put the crypts in and just use epiphytic plants? Will that just ultimately lead to algae blooms.

I am not the most technology savvy person in the world but if I can figure it out I will post some pics of the process. Any comments in general would be most appreciated, thanks.

i wish i could provide an answer, but i haven't grown crypts at all.. so i don't know if it makes a difference or not.

you might get better info in the plants forum.

Crypts should be fine, though Wendtii grows a bit large. I might go with a smaller crypt. I honestly grow it in PFS

Updated with pics

So after almost a year this tank has finally came to fruition. Just wanted to show it to you all. This is kinda just thrown together from hardscape items I had lying around and plant cuttings from other tanks. Wanted to take advantage of the shape of the aquarium having it look good from multiple viewing angles. Adding my new favorite plant hygrophila pinnatifida once I have enough cuttings from my big tank. Also decided that the CPO's were enough and didn't add any fish but might add some shrimp and a snail or two. Not the best pics (hard with the octagon shape) Any questions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Next my Lorax themed tank!

Well that's encouraging. They actually aren't shrimp but small crayfish called Cambarellus patzcuarensis orange, or CPO for short. They are awesome.

Yeah CPO's are nice for nanos because they only grow to about 1.5 inches and don't need a heater in their tanks.
