Bomb the Black Brush Algae?

I am going to convert my African cichlid tank to a planted soft water system. The tank has a history of Black Brush Algae.
Is it worth it to bomb the tank in transition with potassium permanganate before starting over, or will the plants taking off make that unnecessary? I would hate for this stuff to show its ugly face ever again!

it sounds like you have too much light to start with.

too much light + no co2 + no plants = BBA.

Remove as much of it as possibly before you move everything over. I would highly suggest if you are going planted, get co2 and the proper lights

yes, I have that covered. When it was cichlids only it was low tech but I'm going to go the high tech planted route when I start over.

So you think the black brush won't return if I can outcompete it, then?

BBA is very hard to kill. I think you could just use ordinary bleach solution to "sterilize" the tank before using it for a planted tank. Bleach does kill BBA if used in a fairly strong solution for a half hour or so. Then you just rinse thoroughly, and use Prime or equivalent to neutralize any chlorine left. I have done it that way a few times, but, since I was too stubborn to reduce my light intensity the BBA returned later.
