wood ID

I went out today and collected a few branches. I'm pretty sure i've got some maples, oak, and some other kind. Any help IDing would be good because im not sure if i can use them in my tanks or not.

Also I've never prepped wood for an aquarium before; anyone got any advice?

Thanks

What about the spikey ball thing (last picture). I know the one with the acorn is an oak, the rest are maple and spikey ball. are these safe to use?

The safest method is to boil the wood. If you don't want your aquarium water to turn a dark yellow/ brown you'll need to boil the tannins out for a while. I had to boil mine for a few hours in a large stew pot, flipping it over about every half hour. Once the water in the pot is dark, you'll need to replace it will fresh and keep boiling it until the water runs clear. The water will always seep tannins but with boiling beforehand and regular water changes, it's usually not a problem. Boiling also gets rid of any other organisms that might be lurking on the wood.

Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.”
