What should I expect?

Dad, ignorant as hell, decided to take some branches from parks and put them into his fish tanks right away.

Tried to talk him out of it, but stubborn as he is, I got nothing so....

Some of the branches still have roots attached and are releasing a white substance that looks like flakes under water.

What should I be expecting so I can tell my dad the issue when something goes wrong.

a pic might help.

Are these tree branches, or some sort of other plant fragment?

I think the worst case scenario would be that they leach some sort of sap or something that is toxic.

Best case scenario, they just slowly degrade.

Maybe try and increase the amount of water changes, and run some carbon in the filters? or see if you can take them out and give them a good scrubbing with a stiff nylon brush.
