"rusty" rocks

Hi, havn't been able to find anything on search about this:
I found some rocks that look like they would be nice in the tank, cept they have this weird reddish "rust" look to them. When I first washed them off, they did leave the water a little bit murkey but now it runs clear. Would the usual "fizz" test work on something like this? I would think not, how else should I find out if it is safe?

thx

Place them into a small empty aquarium (or a bucket if you don't have one). Fill & let sit for one week. No red tinged water? No probs.

A little muriatic acid dropped on the rock. If the rock fizzes, it isn't suitable for a planted aquarium.

To elaborate on Momotaro's explination, I believe the fizz is the acid reacting to some kind of carbonate in the rock which can lead to kh issues? The red stuff on said rock is almost like rust which I would imagine is a different issue altogether, therefor my question.

I see, thanks all. I also avoided putting in a rusty rock in my Vivarium for the safety of the frogs, especially since I had a water feature.

I have been following a couple of threads about excess iron causing hair algae problems, as of now it is all speculation but somthing to pay attention to.
