trimming narrow leaf chain swords

My aquascape does not look quite right - trying to figure out how to make it look better. My chain swords are just too tall.

Can you give chain swords a haircut?

Should I rip out large parts of my yard and replanting it with smaller, newer growth.

Should I try to keep my yard thinner to incourage less vertacle growth?

My older chains have some beard algae as well, so massive pruning of the yard might not be a bad idea anyway - rip out the whole thing and just replant younger plants that are not effected yet.
