What tests kits do i need?

I already have test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, i'm using them for my other tanks, but since i'm setting up for planted tanks what other tests kits do i need, and how often should i test?

You want to know pH, CO2 (assuming you will inject CO2!), and possibly PO4.

For pH measuring you can buy a "pen", they have come down in price considerably over the last year or so. Or get a liquid test.

You can calculate CO2 via pH and kH. Since we have pH, we need a kH kit. Most water sources have a somewhat fixed kH, so if you know someone with a kit or have it tested at a fish store you might be set. Cheap enough to get a titration kit like from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals so you can test whenever you feel like it.

For nutrients, you have the NO3 kit, and a PO4 kit wouldn't hurt, but it isn't really necessary either, unless you are curious or have unexplainable problems with plant growth and algae.

make sure to check the dates on the kits, they do go bad. Big Al's has them as well.
