How do I get nice looking Java fern???

It makes me mad, everyone else has perfect green, lush Java Fern, and mine looks terrible. As soon as the leaves get big, they die off. The little ones look good though, what's the problem?

Tank:

5g
20watt Phillips plant and aquarium bulb
PH: 7.0
KH: 8-9
Homemade Yeast C02 system
Nitrate: Always 10-15ppm(I dose)
I add leaf zone twice a week
I do have lots of black, small, spotted snails though.

What do the leaves look like before they die off? Do they turn pale or yellow? Do they get dark spots, then begin to disintegrate? Any other signs before they bite the dust?

It starts off with a few little brown dots, and then it goes throughout the whole leaf, and over time the whole thing is mostly brown.

Its simple... you are underdosing your ferts.
For any plant to sustain the older growth of a plant, the plant needs to be fed. Ferns especially are notorious for this. Your specifics were pretty general on dosing but I can tell you that when I had the large ferns they broke the mold between dosing and sanity.

Ok, I use Greenlgiht tree stump remover, and I dose that about 2x a week. Nitrate levels are only 10-15ppm, should I bump it up to 20ppm? Should I put in Leaf zone 3x a week? Anything thing I should buy for them? Thanks

If you are going to use off the shelf products like the stump remover for ferts, then check out this thread\ for dosing info, keeping in mind that your tank is 1/6 the volume of the above mentioned tank. Another source of dosing and general planted info is Rex Griggs page. I highly recomend it.

I missed the "5 gallon" part...

Very difficult tanks to dose. You will find the Java's will take that tank over in no time when it is fed properly. They also like water movement which could pose problems in this case since i doubt you even have a filter going.

Do you ?

I found 1/8teaspoon puts the nitrates up 10ppm every time. So that isn't a problem.

I have a 100gph HOB whisper filter with a sponge in the intake to limit the flow. All the ferns sway gently in the current, I also noticed about 5-7 little sprouts coming off a half dead leaf I left in there. But the problem it, when they get 3-4", they start to ge brown spots...

I also have a 50watt heater(I know it's a lot, but it's all I have).

BTW: This is just a growout tank, when they get big and healthy, they go in the 55g.
