Substrate smelly

I have sand mixed with eco-complete. I had it in a 90 gallon about 3 inches deep for about a month. Then I tore it down and took it all out and the substrate smelled bad. Its been sitting in 5 gallon buckets for about a month now and still stinks. Not really bad, but it does have a noticeable odor when. Is it ok to put this stuff back into my tank when i rebuild it?

You will need to rinse it if it has been sitting that long. The smell is coming from decaying mulm.

Thanks for the info, that just leads me to more questions.

Is decaying mulm unsafe for plants? Will it just go away eventually? Should I use chlorine when I rinse it. Im concerned that rinsing eco-complete might take away the benefits of using it.

It will just put ammonia back into the water and be broken down by other plants or bacteria.
