Exclamation Rock question...(pics)

I used some muriatic acid to see if a rock I found in the mountians would be ok to put in my tank. When I put the acid on the orange areas of the rock it would fizz but not when I put the acid on the auctual rock. The orange spots look like some kind of build up, not part of the rock. So do you think it would affect my water that much or is there a way I could remove the build up? I tried a steel brush, but no luck

That is a great looking rock!

You say it is build up, and not a whole layer (it doesn't go all the way through the rock). How thick is the build up? You could probably soak the whole rock in an acid solution. That will speed up what will eventually come off in your tank, just like people soak drift wood to remove the tanins.

Thanks. Yes, it's a build up of something, not a layer of different type of rock. What type of acid solution would I soak it in? Full acid, or duillited?

Try bleach, it'll make the rock whitier and off set the color difference.
I would not worry about testing nuthing with acid, the CaCO3 dissolves so slowly, if you do water changes, it'll not cause any issues, Onyx sand FYI, is calcite(CaCO3)..........

Tom Barr

I would be careful with pure acid. I'm not much of a chemist, but I remember from chemistry in college --- *do what you otta, add acid to watta(water)*
Anyway, nice rock -- where abouts did you go?

I found it next to a stream in Mt. Baldy I found some cool driftwood there also. I have been soaking a large peice of driftwood I found in the mountians about 2 months ago and it is still releasing lots of tannins

If you do decide to go the acid route, I would really dilute it. I have heard of people using Lime Away. If you soak it in anything make sure to rinse it really well. If you aren't in a hurry, Next water change take your tank water and soak the rock in it for a week. Test GH and KH before and after the week of soaking.
