media

I have eheim 2128 and the filstar xp3 i have now had them for a year and still have the same media in them. How often are you suppose to change the media if at all? Should i be doing it more often or not at all.

"Biomedia" isn't supposed to be changed.

For mechanical filtration, I am using sponges. Some say they degrade over time, but the ones I got with my XP3's over 2 years ago are still fine.

I don't squeeze them, I just flush them clean with a garden hose. Squeezing them might reduce their lifespan.

As for micron pads, I think you're supposed to replace them each time. That's why (and because they clog quickly) I don't use them.

I've had my Eheim and Fluvals running for over a year and don't see any need to replace the media...at least not yet. I just rinse them out during filter cleanings. The Efi-substrate (is that what it's called?) that looks like white gravel does seem to drop a lot of particles so I may end up replacing that if I see the media size drop too much.
