Anyone here have any luck with African Cichlids and Plants? I'm thinking of using sand as substrate. Will plants be able to grow in sand ?

To answer your second question, many (if not all plants) do fine in sand. In order to get really good growth though, you will need to have a bottom layer of substrate that has more nutrients.

About african cichlids and plants, there are very few plants that can be kept with african cichlids. I think anubias, java fern, and possibly val are some, but they are very limited. Many african cichlids will plow under the sand and uproot the plants. I would reccomend central or south american cichlids instead.

You can do it, but don't even think about rooting the plants in the substrate. Use whatever substrate you want, but if you want plants, get a long piece of driftwood, or several pieces, and rubber band some anubias, java fern, riccia, etc. to the wood and let the wood provide an anchor for those bulldozing African Cichlids. I've got a few Anubias and Java Ferns growing on my Driftwood and they anchor VERY securely, boring into the wood, deriving nutrients from the wood and holding fast.
