Forgot About My Fish After A 10 Day Vacation

I just thought Id share this.

I have a 55 gal planted tank , pretty hevaily planted. I left about 2 months ago to Mexico for 10 days and forgot to have anybody watch my fish and feed them.

At the time I had 4 snails, 2 glo lite tetras, 4 corys, 2 plecos.

I cam back and then saw the tank. It was fairly clean. ALot less algae than when I had left for the trip. I was worried that all my fish had died. But none died, in fact I had an extra cory... they had babies (only one survived) but all my snails except one died...

Why would all the snails die but not the fish?>

Aren't suprises nice? I suppose it's nice in this case (at least it wasn't a personal one!!!). I've heard that breeding cories was relatively easy, but haven't tried.

Welcome back!

GO DAWGS!!! Sure did Sic 'Em!! 48-13...Smurfs go back home....

Re-boot!

Interesting, I would have guessed that the corys would have been the group to die.

I wonder what they ate.

The cories probably ate the snails to survive. And the snail population took a double hit for lack of food and cories not cutting them any slack because they were starving. A good happy mistake.

yea it was very suprising to me. Im glad they at most of my algae though.

I bought 2 more snails and 3 gouramis since I have been back... Gouramis seem to always be munching on my algae, anyone else notice this.

Snail population is directly dependable on the amount of food you feed to your fish. So, no fish food, less snails .

I think we often underestimate the length of time that (adult!) fish can do without food, and often overestimate the needs for feeding.

I have left my fishies alone for 3 weeks without any problems. They all wagged their tails when they saw me, but looked just as fat or slim as always.

Maybe it's different in overstocked tanks. But I think leaving your fish 10 days alone is not a reason to be concerned in any way. And those automatic feeders do more harm than good.
