hydroponics, willow, mangrove

My mind is often coming up with less than well thought up ideas – but usually I am wise enough not to share them…

Thinking about roots in the water column at the moment. Heard mangrove can make an interesting living fliter. Anyone ever try willow (any possible tannin/toxis issues)?

Likewise was thinking that using EI, I am basically creating a hydroponics solution - anyone try other plants above their aquarium and letting them get wet feet (roots in the water)?

The majority of my undergrad and grad research involved hydroponics...I grew a bunch of hyperaccumulators (uptake of really high levels of heavy metals into tissues) using Rorison's solution spiked with Nickel, Zinc and Cadmium.

Anything suspended in Rorison's or probably an EI type of solution will work since all we did was sow the seeds in little plastic rafts, then constructed styrofoam boats to put the plant "plugs" in...the roots just dangled in the solution and soaked up all the metals.

As far as species...I think Mangrove is used a lot in saltwater tanks to control nitrates and such. Willows are currently being used in the phytoremediation industry (using plants to clean up contaminated soils and water)....basically nurseries are contracted to grow the plants hydroponically until they are ready for transplant to the soil/water location that is polluted.

As far as tannin/toxicity issues...none that I know of for the two species. I do know that Salix has a lot of qualitative toxins in them that deter insects.
