new planted tank

I am about to setup up a new 30 gallon planted tank. One question i have is, will using a AquaClear HOB 30 filter create too much water movement and subsequently CO2 loss?

No, it'll be fine. Sure, it'll lose some CO2, but not as much as you think, and although not as good as a cannister, it's quite accpetpable.. I've even used a mini as an injector on DIY CO2 to raise a 10gallon to 65ppm (accidentally)! As for overall flow, it's still not too much. All of the Aquaclear's can be adjusted from full, to a pretty medium/low flow-rate, allowing you to literally customize the water movement.

But yes, it will cause "some" CO2 loss.

Plants are gone, but my 33gal and I are back after a long hiatus.

You'll be fine but, would be better if you get a canister running on that 30g.

so a canister filter would be better than a HOB for CO2 loss? How many gallons per hour should i be looking to filter on a 29g planted tank?

I have a Rena XP-2 on a 29 gallon tank and it works quite nicely.

I just got an XP1 on my 30 gallon and noticed a big difference between it and my old HOB.
